When you book your senior photo session, you’re probably thinking about your outfits, the location, and maybe how to pose without feeling awkward. But there’s a whole other level of prep that can make your session smoother, more fun, and a whole lot more comfortable.
We’ve photographed dozens of seniors across Southeast Michigan, and one thing we know for sure: it’s the little things you bring that make a big difference.

Here are 5 simple (but often forgotten) items to toss in your bag before you head to your shoot:
1. A Touch-Up Kit
Whether it’s chapstick, oil blotting sheets, a small mirror, or a travel-size hairbrush – these small items are lifesavers. Michigan weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared for wind, humidity, or a little extra shine from the sun. Yes, that goes for you too, gentlemen…shine control and hydrated lips look good on everyone.
💡 Bonus Tip: If you wear makeup, bring the essentials for a quick refresh between locations or outfit changes.

2. Comfy Shoes (That You Can Walk In!)
For you ladies, we know your stylish heels or new sneakers are chef’s kiss for photos. But if your session involves walking to different spots (think downtown Detroit or a rustic trail at Bald Mountain), you’ll be glad you brought a pair of flats, slides, or sneakers to change into.
3. Water + Snacks
Senior sessions are 45 minutes with our shorter sessions or up to two hours with our traditional senior sessions. A water bottle and a snack can help keep your energy up – especially during warmer fall days or golden hour sessions.

4. A Hype Playlist
Feeling a little nervous? Music is magic. Create a playlist that hypes you up, relaxes you, or makes you feel like the main character (because you are). We’ve even had seniors play music from their phone during the shoot, it helps shake off the nerves and capture genuine joy.
🎵 Pro Tip: Share your playlist with your photographer beforehand so they can bring a speaker if needed!
5. A Bag or Tote to Carry Everything
You don’t want to be juggling outfits, shoes, makeup, and water in your arms. Bring a tote bag or backpack to hold everything – and consider designating a friend or parent as your “session assistant” (we promise it’s a fun role!).

At the end of the day, your senior session should feel fun, easy, and like you. A little prep goes a long way in making the experience as stress-free and relaxed as possible.
And don’t worry – we’ve got you covered every step of the way. From helping you choose your location to fixing flyaways mid-shoot, we’re here to make this your best photo day ever.
