Everything You Need to Know About Maternity &Newborn Photo Sessions

Welcoming a new baby is one of the most magical, and let’s be honest, chaotic chapters in life.
Between the bump, the baby, and all the changes in between, it’s easy to let time slip by without
ever stepping in front of the camera.

That’s where we come in.

At Smith & Co Photo, we specialize in capturing the tender, beautiful moments of early
motherhood -both before and after your little one arrives. If you’re wondering when to book,
what to wear, or how it all works, we’ve got answers!

Let’s walk through some of the most common questions we hear from our maternity and
newborn clients across the Metro Detroit and Southeast Michigan area.

When should I schedule my maternity and newborn sessions?

  • Maternity sessions are typically scheduled between 28–34 weeks, when your bump is round and visible but you’re still (hopefully!) feeling comfortable.
  • Newborn sessions are best booked during your second trimester, with the actual shoot happening within the first 7–14 days after birth.

Not sure when baby will arrive? That’s totally normal. We’ll reserve a window around your due
date and confirm once baby makes their big debut.

What if I miss the “ideal” newborn window? Can I still do a session?

Absolutely. While the first two weeks are best for those sweet, sleepy photos, many parents opt
to photograph their baby between 1 and 3 months for a more attentive, interactive baby.

Older newborns are more alert, more expressive, and sometimes even smile on camera. No
matter what, we’ll capture something beautiful.

Do we do the session in a studio or at home?

All newborn sessions will be photographed in your home. It’s easier for new parents and we
love capturing families in their favorite, most personal space.

One of the concerns we get is that people think their home isn’t “photogenic” enough. No
worries! We use small spaces throughout your home…near a window, on a bed, against a wall,
in the baby’s nursery, etc.

What to wear for your maternity session

What should we wear?

For maternity:

  • Flowy dresses, fitted gowns, or even jeans and a tank—whatever makes you feel strong, beautiful, and you.
  • Neutrals, soft pastels, or earthy tones photograph beautifully against natural backdrops.

For newborn:

  • Baby can wear a simple onesie, swaddle, or be wrapped in one of our studio blankets.
  • Parents and siblings: soft colors, cozy knits, and textures always win. Avoid bold logos or loud patterns.

Family newborn photos

Can my partner and other kids be in the photos too?

Yes! We love capturing growing families, and that includes proud big siblings, fur babies (if
we’re in your home), and the sweet moments between parents.

These sessions are about connection, not perfection.

Common questions for your newborn and materity session

How long will the session take?

  • Maternity sessions You have your choice between our 45 minutes at pre-chosen locations, or a full lifestyle session (1.5-2 hours) at a location of your choice.
