(And Why We’re Always Happy to Answer Them)

You’re engaged – yay! Cue the Pinterest boards, celebratory drinks, and the never-ending list of vendors to book. Somewhere near the top? Your wedding photographer. But how do you know you’re choosing the right one?

While there are a million articles out there telling you to ask about things like camera equipment or insurance (we’ve got both, I promise), what you really need are honest, practical questions that help you get to know the people behind the camera – and make sure you’re on the same page from the start.

Here are six thoughtful, realistic questions we love when couples ask us (and a peek into how we answer them):

Have you photographed at our venue before?

This is a great question! While we don’t need to have shot at your venue before to create beautiful images (scouting is part of our process), it’s totally fair to ask. Our team of wedding photographers have been shooting weddings in the area for years and have likely been to or worked at your venue of choice. If we have worked there, we can share sample blog posts or galleries or point out favorite hidden corners. If it’s new to us, we’ll arrive early, explore, and plan for the best lighting and locations ahead of time.

Either way – you’re covered.

Can we share a Pinterest board or some inspiration photos?

Yes please! While we can’t replicate exact photos (different couple, lighting, location, etc), we love seeing what your vibe and vision is. Your inspo photos helps us understand if you love moody candids, romantic details, or all the joyful, movement-filled shots.

Will YOU be the one photographing our wedding?

Totally fair, especially if you’re reaching out to a studio or team. When you book with Smith & Co, YOU are the one to choose which photographer you want to work with, and that photographer will have one of our second photographers with him/her on your wedding day. We’re all about building a relationship so you feel calm, confident, and genuinely excited when we show up to photograph your day. You can meet all the Smith & Co team members HERE.

What’s your turnaround time? When will we get our photos?

We know the wait is tough, especially when you’re riding the post-wedding high and dying to get a peek! We deliver a few sneak peeks within the first week and full galleries are typically ready around 6 weeks. Everything is beautifully edited and delivered in an easy-to-use online gallery.

What happens if it rains – or something unexpected happens?

We plan for it. Always. Michigan weather is like a moody teenager, and we’ve seen it all…blazing sun, surprise showers, wind, even snow in spring. Rest assured we have worked in every type of weather situation and we’ll be prepared with backup plans, indoor options, clear umbrellas, and the ability to adapt lighting and locations to keep your photos gorgeous no matter what.

Can we see a full wedding gallery, not just your highlights?

We love this question. Anyone can post 10 swoon-worthy images on Instagram. But a full gallery? That shows consistency, storytelling, and what you’ll really get from start to finish. We’re always happy to send a full gallery or two so you can see exactly how we document an entire day, from morning mimosas to sparkler exits.
