When’s the Best Time to Photograph Your Newborn?

You’ve probably heard that you need to schedule your newborn photos within the first 7–10 days after birth.

And while yes, those early days do offer a dreamy, sleepy, curled-up look… they’re not the only time to capture your baby beautifully.

Let’s break down the different stages of newborn photography so you can choose the timing that fits your family and your baby best.

when to schedule your newborn session

 7–10 Days: Sleepy & Squishy

This is the “classic” newborn session window, and for good reason.

At this stage, your baby is still super sleepy, easily posed, and hasn’t quite stretched out yet – perfect for those womb-like, curled-up images.

We’re able to gently guide them into peaceful poses, swaddle them snugly, and capture that brand-new baby softness.

Perfect for: Parents who love dreamy, wrapped, studio-style photos.

Tip: We recommend booking your newborn session before baby arrives to secure a spot in that early window.

2–4 Weeks: Awake & Alert

Didn’t book in the first 10 days? Don’t worry, we’ve got you.

At 2–4 weeks old, babies are starting to stretch, open their eyes more, and interact with the world around them.

While they may not sleep as deeply, this age gives us a chance to capture eye contact, first smiles, and tiny personality peeks.

Perfect for: Lifestyle sessions at home or relaxed studio sessions that focus on connection.

Bonus: You’ve had a little more time to rest and recover. That comfort shows in your photos, too.

2–3 Months: Personality & Playfulness

By this point, your baby is smiling, cooing, and maybe even holding up their head.

While it’s not a traditional “newborn” session, it’s an amazing time to document the milestones of early babyhood.

Think: chubby cheeks, expressive eyes, and lots of sweet cuddles with mom and dad.

Perfect for: Families who want a more interactive session or missed the early window altogether.
