Planning a family photo session should feel exciting, not stressful. Whether this is your first time
or you’re a seasoned pro at wrangling toddlers in coordinating outfits, we know you’ve got
questions. And we’ve got answers!
Here’s everything you need to know to feel calm, confident, and totally prepared for your next
family session with us in Michigan.

When is the best time of year to schedule family photos?
Honestly? There’s no bad time…just different vibes.
- Fall is our busiest season (hello, crisp air and golden leaves!), so if you want those iconic autumn colors, plan early – like summer early.
- Spring brings fresh blooms and softer color palettes.
- Summer is great for later sunsets, warm temps, and relaxed outdoor sessions with the kids.
- Winter can be magical too – especially for cozy, in-home sessions or snowy scenes.
Pro Tip: The earlier you book, the more flexibility you’ll have with dates and locations.

What should we wear for our family photos?
You don’t have to be Pinterest-perfect. Choose outfits that reflect your family’s personality and
make you feel comfortable and confident.
Here are a few quick tips:
- Stick to coordinated colors, not matching outfits. Think soft neutrals, earth tones, or seasonal hues.
- Avoid loud patterns or logos that can distract from your faces.
- Dress in layers and textures—they photograph beautifully and give you some variety.
- Make sure everyone feels good in their outfit (no scratchy fabrics or too-tight shoes!).

What if my kids don’t cooperate?
This is probably the #1 worry parents have—and we totally get it.
Here’s the truth: we don’t expect perfection. We expect real life. We come ready with patience, playfulness, and prompts that keep kids engaged and happy. Some of our favorite photos come from the in-between moments—tickles, hugs, even a pouty face or two.
So take a deep breath. You don’t need perfect behavior. You just need to show up as a family.

Can we include grandparents or pets in our session?
Absolutely!
Grandparents make sessions even more meaningful, and pets are part of the family too. Just let
us know in advance so we can plan on doing those photos for the first or last 15-20 minutes of
the session.

Where should we take our family photos?
We work in some of the most beautiful locations in the Metro Detroit area, from charming
downtown streets to nature-filled parks and peaceful lakesides. You can choose from one of our suggested locations or we can shoot at a location of your choice.
- Maybury Park (Northville) – open trails and wooded areas
- Kensington Metropark (Milford) – stunning lake views and natural beauty
- Downtown Clarkston or Northville – charming small-town streets
- Independence Oaks & Bald Mountain State Park – for rustic, outdoorsy feels
- Bald Mountain State Park – golden fields, woodsy trails, and natural light galore
Not sure what fits your style? We’ll help you choose the perfect spot based on your vibe and the
season.

How long does a session last?
We offer shorter 45 minute minute sessions at pre-chosen locations, or our full 1.5-2 hour
lifestyle sessions at a location of your choice.
We use a mix of posed shots and candid prompts to keep things moving and relaxed.

How far in advance should we book?
For fall and spring? The earlier the better – at least 2–3 months in advance if you want a specific
date or popular location.
For other times of year, we usually have more flexibility, but don’t wait too long—especially if
you’re hoping to use your photos for holiday cards or gifts.

When will we get our photos back?
You’ll get a social media peek within the first week, and your full gallery will be delivered in
about 2 weeks.
We’ll send you all the details on how to access, download, and order prints or albums (trust
us—you’ll want to display them everywhere!).

Do you offer indoor or studio sessions, or only outdoor?
We no longer have a studio as most of our clients want personal indoor locations (such as their home) or outdoor locations (such as a city spot or nature scene). We love the flexibility and beauty these locations give us for incredible family photos!

What happens if the weather is bad?
Michigan weather…she has a mind of her own. We keep a close eye on the forecast for all upcoming sessions and will reach out if there’s any concern. Try not to stress too far in advance, forecasts here can change daily (sometimes hourly). If things look questionable, we’ll touch base the evening before to decide whether we’re good to go or if it’s better to reschedule.
